Situated in Scotland, Hogwarts was founded in the Middle ages. Students are sorted in to separate houses by an enchanted hat, based on criteria of defining personality traits: Gryffindor for courage, Hufflepuff for fairness, Ravenclaw for wit and Slytherin for cunning. Hogwarts mostly teaches students from the United Kingdom. Students begin at Hogwarts at age eleven, and children from all lineages are taught at Hogwarts. Standard schooling at Hogwarts is seven years. Instruction is given in English. Both girls and boys attend Hogwarts and the houses have both male and female students in them.
ACADÉMIE DE MAGIE BEAUXBATONS
Situated just off the southern coast of France near Cannes. Founded in the Middle ages, Beauxbatons begins teaching wizard children at age eight. The school has a very rigid standard of behaviour and dress code; all students are required to stand when a teacher enters the room. Beauxbatons accepts students of all wizarding backgrounds and mainly teaches students from southern Europe. Standard schooling at Beauxbatons lasts nine years, and students are taught in multiple languages, although French is the most common. Beauxbatons admits both male and female students, who reside in opposite ends of the castle.
DURMSTRANG INSTITUTE
Situated near the Galdhøpiggen Mountains in Norway, the Durmstrang Institute teaches wizarding students from the age of twelve to nineteen. Instead of learning defensive magic, Durmstrang students instead are taught the dark arts. Durmstrang does not accept muggleborn students, and therefore the social climate is not terribly accepting of muggles and muggleborns. There is no sorting process at Durmstrang, and the school teaches students of both genders. Durmstrang instruction is given in several different dialects. Male and female students live in separate areas of the castle.
FÖRVANDLING ACADEMY
Hidden in Kiruna, Sweden is an ultra-modern wizarding academy which only accepts students who have not grown up in the magical world. The school's main focus is helping students to make the transition from the muggle world to the wizarding world, the school features a hybrid curriculum of muggle and wizarding subjects. Founded in the late 1500's, the school teaches muggle-raised wizards and witches from northern Europe. There is no sorting process and students begin at the school at age nine and do not finish schooling until they are nineteen. Unlike most wizarding schools, there is a parents night for all muggle parents to come to the school. The school appears to be a regular muggle school. Instruction is given in several different dialects. Male and female students live in separate wings of the building.
SALEM WITCHES' INSTITUTE
Located in Salem, Massachusetts is the Salem Witches' Institute. First established in 1642. An all-girls wizarding school which accepts students from all over North America. Students start at the school at age ten years and standard schooling lasts for nine years. Students are sorted into groups based on a magical focus system once they reach the age of sixteen. Instruction is given in English and occasionally Spanish or French. It is the female counterpart of the Springfield Wizarding Academy.
SPRINGFIELD WIZARDING ACADEMY
Located in Springfield, Massachusetts is the Springfield Wizarding Academy. First established in 1642. Springfield Wizarding Academy accepts students from all over North America. They only accept male students starting at age ten, and standard schooling lasts for nine years. Students are sorted into groups based on a study focus system once they turn sixteen. Instruction is given in English and occasionally Spanish or French. Male counterpart school to the Salem Witches' Institute.
MIWAKU NO MAHŌ
Located near the town of Ibaraki in the Higashiibaraki District, Japan, is a magical academy dating back past the middle ages. Well hidden from muggles, the academy teaches wizarding children of all bloodlines. Students start at age eight and remain in schooling for eleven years. Despite the school being co-ed, male and female students are kept strictly apart. Aside from separation of the genders, there is no other sorting process. They are housed and taught separately, and strict curfews are in place. Students from all over Asia are taught at the school and instruction is given in Japanese.
BRUXARIA ACADEMY
Hidden in the shadow of Mount Roraima in Brazil is a magical academy dating back prior to Europe's discovery of South America. It was expanded and re-named after Europeans landed in South America. The academy teaches wizarding children of all backgrounds and has a special focus on traditional aboriginal magic. The school is co-ed and students begin education at age seven. Education takes place until the age of twenty-one. Students are sorted by an enchanted statue into one of three houses when they are fourteen: Tegia for determination, Rupca for loyalty and Rolar for ambition. Instruction is given in Portuguese and Spanish as well as a variety of aboriginal languages.
